An early manuscript variant changes 'authority' to 'covering' (kalumma) in verse 10. While not original, this shows an ancient Greek-speaking scribe understood Paul's 'authority' as referring to the head covering -- supporting the symbolic interpretation. Greek fathers consistently understood it this way.
