Ann Marie, It wasn’t his salvation that was the issue of doubt. The doubt was whether Jesus was the Messiah. This meant that John was doubting both the Father and the Spirit who were witnesses to him about Jesus. John had received the greatest witness and the greatest revelation of any man. What further witness would he believe? The fact that John disbelieved the witness of God and was looking for a further witness makes his unbelief very troublesome. If you had the great revelations that John had would you fail to keep believing that Jesus is the Messiah?
