The bible does say that we are friends of God, but I don’t think that this gets rid of love.  The “lover” of our soul is an unconditional agape love of God that fills our very being inside.  We are to reciprocate that love by loving him back with our whole mind, body and soul.  To me that goes beyond mere friendship although I certainly do not discount friendship.  The ones who add in a sexual overtone are looking at God with their human understanding.
