Adam's Sin and Universal Death — Federal Headship and Election (Romans 5:12-19)
Summary
Complementarian claim: Adam's federal headship proves that men are the spiritual representatives/authorities. Sin came through Adam because he was the head. His sin was treason (Hosea 6:7), not mere disobedience. (2) Adam's "headship" resulted in death for all — hardly a model for church leadership. (3) The last Adam (Christ) exercises his headship through self-sacrifice, testimony to truth, and giving his life — the opposite of authority-based command. (4) If anything, the Adam/Christ typology teaches that true headship means laying down one's life, not wielding authority.
Was Adam A Type Of Christ: Some suggest Adam deliberately sinned to be "with his beloved" — a Christlike sacrifice. But this reads romance into treason. Adam's sin was NOT sacrificial love — it was passive compliance with deception he could have stopped. Christ sacrificed himself to SAVE his bride; Adam stood silent while his bride was being deceived. Christ spoke truth to power; Adam said nothing. Christ went to the cross willingly out of love; Adam ate the fruit out of willful disobedience. Adam is a type of Christ only in the sense of antitype — everything Christ did right, Adam did wrong.
