ἱλασμός

hilasmos

propitiation, atoning sacrifice

Summary

ἱλασμός ("propitiation / atoning sacrifice") appears in 1 John 2:2 with explicit universal scope: "not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world." Calvinists who insist on propitiation (wrath-satisfaction) face a dilemma: if Christ's sacrifice satisfies God's wrath for the whole world, either the atonement is unlimited or "whole world" must be redefined. The provisionist position: Christ's wrath-satisfying sacrifice was provided for all, applied through faith.

Morphology and Etymology

ἱλασμός is a noun derived from ἱλάσκομαι (hilaskomai, "to propitiate, to make atonement"). It appears only twice in the NT: 1 John 2:2 and 1 John 4:10. The word carries the sense of an offering that turns away wrath or satisfies the demands of justice.

Semantic Range

The translation debate between "propitiation" (satisfaction of divine wrath) and "expiation" (removal of sin) has significant theological implications but does not affect the scope argument. Whether ἱλασμός means Christ's sacrifice satisfied God's wrath or removed sin, both senses are applied universally in 1 John 2:2 ("for the whole world").

LXX Background

In the LXX, the ἱλασ- word group is used for the Day of Atonement sacrifices (Leviticus 16) and other atoning rituals. The mercy seat (ἱλαστήριον, hilasterion) is where atonement was made. Paul uses ἱλαστήριον in Romans 3:25 to describe Christ as the place/means of propitiation -- publicly displayed and received "through faith."

Theological Significance for the Atonement Debate

The Calvinist who insists on "propitiation" (wrath-satisfaction) faces a dilemma in 1 John 2:2: if Christ's sacrifice satisfies God's wrath, and it does so "for the whole world," then either (a) God's wrath is satisfied for everyone (unlimited atonement) or (b) "whole world" doesn't mean the whole world. The provisionist holds (a) with the qualifier that the satisfaction is applied through faith -- God's wrath is satisfied IN Christ, and sinners access that satisfaction by being in Christ through faith (Romans 8:1).
