κλητός

klētos

called, invited

Summary

κλητός ("called, invited") does not mean "irresistibly summoned" as Calvinism teaches. Matthew 22:14 — "many are called but few are chosen" — directly contradicts effectual calling: if the call were irresistible, all the called would be chosen. The call is genuinely extended to more people than ultimately respond, making it sufficient and genuine but not deterministic.

Lexical Range

From καλέω (kaleō, "to call, to invite"). The adjective κλητός means "called, invited, summoned." In secular Greek, it was used for guests invited to a banquet.

NT Usage

  • Romans 1:1 — Paul, "called as an apostle" — a specific vocational calling
  • Romans 1:6-7 — Believers as "the called of Jesus Christ," "called as saints" — describes their status as those who responded to God's invitation
  • Romans 8:28 — "those who are called according to His purpose" — the called are those who love God
  • 1 Corinthians 1:2 — "to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling"
  • 1 Corinthians 1:24 — "to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God"
  • Matthew 22:14 — "Many are called (κλητοί), but few are chosen (ἐκλεκτοί)" — critical distinction: the call goes out broadly, but not all respond; those who respond are "chosen"
  • Revelation 17:14 — "those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful" — three terms in sequence, not synonyms

Theological Significance

The Calvinist reading treats "called" as "effectually called" — an irresistible divine summons that inevitably produces faith. But Matthew 22:14 directly contradicts this: if "called" meant "irresistibly drawn," then all the called would be chosen. The fact that many are called but few are chosen shows the call is genuinely extended to more people than ultimately respond. The call is sufficient and genuine; the response is the individual's.

In Romans 8:28-30, the "called" are described from the divine perspective as those whose entire redemptive journey (foreknown → predestined → called → justified → glorified) is certain. But this certainty is seen from God's timeless vantage point, not from the human sequential experience of hearing and responding to the call.
