שָׁמַר

shamar

to guard, to keep, to watch, to protect

Summary

שָׁמַר (shamar) means "to guard, to protect" — Adam's commission in Genesis 2:15 was to guard the garden, the same word used for Levitical guard duty over the tabernacle. Adam's failure was not a failure of hierarchy but of his protective duty: he was silent when the serpent attacked. He was tasked with guarding the garden, not guarding Eve.
