English translation history of authenteo and the NIV 'assume authority' rendering

ALL The Debates Over 1 Tim 2_11-15: Women in Ministry part 12 (it took me a year to make this) 06:45:00 – 07:08:33

Mike traces how English translations have rendered authenteo from Wycliffe to the present.

Mike surveys English translations: (1) Most major translations use 'have authority' or 'exercise authority' (NASB, ESV, CSB, NKJV); (2) The KJV has 'usurp authority,' but Mike explains this reflected the 1611 meaning of 'usurp' which was closer to 'exercise' than to the modern pejorative 'seize illegitimately'; (3) The NIV 2011 uses 'assume authority,' which some egalitarians cite as support for a pejorative reading. However, Mike reports that NIV translators themselves have stated they did not intend 'assume' in the pejorative sense of 'presume to take.' Douglas Moo, who chaired the NIV translation committee for this section, has confirmed the NIV means 'exercise/have authority,' not 'seize authority illegitimately.' The word 'assume' was intended as 'take on/step into,' not 'presume.'

κεφαλή (kephale) — Logos Clippings (Cheryl Schatz)

A curated collection of Logos Bible Software clippings compiled by Cheryl Schatz examining the Greek word κεφαλή (kephale) and Hebrew רֹאשׁ (rosh). The clippings draw from lexicons, encyclopedias, commentaries, and academic journals to argue that "source/origin" is the primary metaphorical meaning of kephale rather than "authority/leader," with implications for interpreting 1 Corinthians 11, Ephesians 5, and Colossians 1.
