The interpretation that 'the childbearing' refers to the Messiah was held by several early church fathers. Mike presents this as significant: this is not a novel modern interpretation but an ancient one, held by Greek-speaking Christians much closer to the language and culture of the NT. This gives the view historical credibility alongside its exegetical merits.
