Schreiner's objection 1: the Messianic view requires seeing 'she' as Mary

ALL The Debates Over 1 Tim 2_11-15: Women in Ministry part 12 (it took me a year to make this) 10:37:24 – 10:38:56

Mike addresses Tom Schreiner's first objection to the Messianic interpretation.

Schreiner objects that the Messianic view requires identifying 'she' as Mary (the mother of Jesus), since Mary is the one who literally gave birth to the Messiah. He calls reading Mary into the verse 'highly arbitrary.' Mike rebuts: the 'she' does not need to be Mary — it is Eve. In Genesis 3:15, the Messiah is described as the seed of Eve (the woman), not specifically of Mary. In ancient understanding, Eve was the mother of all, and Jesus is the seed of the woman going back to Eve. Paul's focus is on Eve throughout vv.13-14, and the 'she' naturally continues to refer to Eve. Some church fathers did identify the 'she' as Mary, but that is unnecessary for the interpretation to work.
