Both Belleville interpretations depend on reading 'desire' and 'rule over' as sexual/intimate -- this is the weak spot, examined through the Hebrew word 'mashal' (rule).

Testing the sexual interpretation against Hebrew word usage

Mike identifies the common weakness of both Belleville interpretations: they require both 'desire' (teshukah) and 'rule over' (mashal) to mean sexual/intimate things. He surveys 'mashal' throughout Genesis and the OT: Gen 1:18 (sun/moon ruling day/night), Gen 4:7 (Cain must rule over sin), Gen 37:8 (Joseph's brothers don't want him ruling them), Gen 45:8/26 (Joseph rules Egypt). None involve sexuality -- all consistently mean authority/rule.
