Basic doctrinal overview of what the Catholic Church teaches about purgatory

Purgatory involves two things: (1) paying/suffering for sins and (2) being cleansed of remaining sinful desires. Some formulations say the soul would not even want to be in heaven yet and chooses purgatory first. It is described as a 'state of grace' situation — you are saved, but not yet ready for heaven.
