Critical distinction: it is the WORKS that are tested and potentially destroyed by fire, not the person
Core exegetical argument against the Catholic use of 1 Corinthians 3
In purgatory doctrine, it is the person who goes through the fire and is purified. But in the text: 'each one's work will become clear' (not 'each one'), 'the fire will test each one's work' (not 'each one'). The fire does not purify — it destroys inferior works. Precious stones pass through fire unchanged; wood is destroyed. The purgatory concept requires purification, but the passage describes destruction of inferior materials.
