Reading of 2 Maccabees 12:38-46: Judas makes an expiatory sacrifice and prays for the dead soldiers
Full reading of the second key passage
The soldiers died in battle and the text interprets their death as punishment for idolatry. Judas then prays for the dead and collects 2,000 silver drachmas to send to Jerusalem for a sin offering (expiatory sacrifice) on their behalf. The text states: 'he made atonement for the dead that they might be absolved from their sin.'
