Background of 2 Maccabees 12: Judas Maccabeus burying fallen Jewish soldiers who were carrying idolatrous amulets
Historical and narrative context for the passage
Around 160 BC, Judas Maccabeus (the heroic Jewish general) and his army observe the Sabbath, then return to bury fallen comrades. When they go to bury the dead, they discover idolatrous amulets (sacred to the idols of Jamnia) under each soldier's tunic — a violation of Mosaic law.
