(2) The Septuagint (Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, predating Masoretic texts in the copies we have) translates the word as 'pierced.' (3) The Dead Sea Scrolls — which date to the time of Jesus or before, making them ~900 years older than the earliest Masoretic Hebrew — contain a copy of Psalm 22 that reads 'bore through' or 'pierced.' Even if 'like a lion' were correct, Mike argues the meaning is functionally equivalent for purposes of crucifixion (lions bite/claw hands and feet).
