Hosea 11:1 used in Matthew 2:15 — typological fulfillment vs. direct prophecy

Refuting Atheist Video: Bible Has ZERO Fulfilled Prophecy 01:09:29 – 01:12:34

Viewer question: how can Hosea 11:1 ('out of Egypt I called my son') be messianic when it is clearly about Israel in context?

Mike acknowledges Hosea 11:1 is contextually about Israel — the very next verse makes clear the same 'son' was sacrificing to Baals, which does not apply to Jesus. Nevertheless, Matthew 2:15 uses it to describe the return from Egypt of Jesus's family. Mike explains this is typological/foreshadowing use of the word 'fulfilled,' not direct predictive prophecy. Matthew understands all Scripture as speaking of Christ in some sense. Jesus comes as the fulfillment of the entire scriptural narrative — Israel's story is recapitulated in him. This use of 'fulfilled' is looser than the fulfillment of direct predictions like Ezekiel 26 or Isaiah 53, and should not be used as a primary apologetic argument.
