Q&A: Can an atheist legitimately argue about a God they don't believe exists?
Viewer question: isn't it a contradiction for an atheist to argue about God using a Bible they don't believe?
Mike disagrees with the viewer's framing. He argues that it is logically valid to argue about whether something exists even while believing it doesn't. He uses the example: he can construct an argument about whether Vishnu exists without believing in Vishnu. What Mike does find problematic is an atheist making a moral argument against God using the Bible — using a standard of morality to condemn God when, on atheism, there is no objective moral standard. But simply engaging with a text to evaluate its claims is legitimate inquiry.
