Belleville argues: 'Patronage of a house church was an authoritative role. The householder in Greco-Roman times was automatically in charge of any group that met in his or her domicile.' Mike identifies problems: this would make rich people automatic leaders (since they had bigger homes for gatherings), which contradicts James and the general pattern of church leadership not being tied to wealth.
