AD 70 destruction of Jerusalem and the temple as historical context for Mark 13
Mike presents the second background concept: the historical event that is clearly in view in the Olivet Discourse.
Approximately 40 years after the crucifixion and resurrection, Roman armies sacked Jerusalem, destroyed the temple stone by stone, and killed large numbers of Jews. This is the near/partial fulfillment Mike sees in the Olivet Discourse passages. He does not believe it constitutes the full fulfillment, but it cannot be understood without knowing this history.
