Is Phoebe a deacon? Analysis of Romans 16:1 and the word diakonos
Mike examines whether Phoebe held the official office of deacon.
Romans 16:1 calls Phoebe a 'diakonos of the church at Cenchreae.' ESV, NKJV, and NASB translate as 'servant,' but the first clear use of diakonos for an official role is Philippians 1:1. Most NT uses (about 24 times) refer to generic service. In Romans itself, the word is used of government officials (13:4) and of Christ (15:8) in non-church-office senses.
