Romans 12:17-21 — do not repay evil for evil; leave vengeance to God; overcome evil with good, even toward enemies.
New Testament passage on retaliation and the theological grounding for non-retaliation.
Mike connects the impulse to repay evil with anger, and then works through the Romans 12 logic: give thought to what is honorable, live peaceably, leave wrath to God (who will execute it perfectly), and instead feed your enemy if hungry. The 'burning coals' imagery is interpreted as God's promised just response — not the believer's kindness causing harm — freeing the Christian to be generous. Mike concludes that the Christian is never permitted to satisfy their anger — they must die to themselves.
