Jesus says: 'Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.' The scribes and Pharisees had extremely high standards of law-keeping. The bar is even higher still — pointing to a different kind of righteousness altogether (the imputed righteousness of Christ).
