Luke 18:18-24 — Rich Young Ruler: keeping commandments is not enough; Jesus reveals his hidden sin
Mike introduces a third parallel case from Jesus's ministry
A ruler asks Jesus: 'What must I do to inherit eternal life?' He claims to have kept all the commandments from his youth. Jesus does not say 'you're fine.' Instead he exposes a specific hidden bondage — love of wealth — by commanding him to sell everything. The man leaves sorrowful. Jesus notes it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom. The point: everyone has some area of bondage or hidden sin that proves they are not truly righteous before God.
