Apologetic mission trips: exposing youth to real intellectual and religious conflict as a discipleship strategy

The State of Youth Today and How to Disciple Them (Dr. Sean McDowell) 00:26:47 – 00:29:21

McDowell describes the mission trip model developed with Brett Kunkle and J. Warner Wallace

After shifting to the training model, Wallace worked with Brett Kunkle on apologetic mission trips. They raised the bar on what young people are capable of. Practical applications: take kids to a religious site, bring in an atheist or a Mormon to speak to your youth group. The conflict and risk of being challenged causes students to see their faith not as abstract content to memorize but as something they will have to defend. This transforms ministry. McDowell also does this with his own kids. The same principle applies in Christian schools.
