Big picture point 3: The Law was always heading toward replacement—Jeremiah 31 predicts a New Covenant unlike the old
Third foundational contextual claim: the Law had a built-in expiration point
Jeremiah 31:31-34 prophesies a New Covenant distinct from the Mosaic Covenant made at the Exodus. This new covenant involves internalized law written on the heart, full knowledge of God, and total forgiveness of sin. Hebrews 8:13 comments on Jeremiah 31 and states that in speaking of a new covenant, God made the first obsolete. The old covenant was already becoming obsolete and ready to vanish when Hebrews was written.
