Pliny's letter to Trajan: early evidence of female deaconesses (c. 110 AD)

Around 110 AD, Pliny (Roman governor) wrote to Emperor Trajan about persecuting Christians. He reports torturing two women whom the church called 'deaconesses' (ministrae). This is strong early evidence that women held the deacon role in the early church.
