Criterion of restraint — no narratives of private resurrection appearances to Peter and James

A Bunch Of Reasons Christianity Is True: special guest Jonathan McLatchie 01:47:50 – 01:49:54

McLatchie introduces the "criterion of restraint" as further corroboration of the resurrection's historicity.

1 Corinthians 15 explicitly mentions individual appearances to Peter and to James. Luke 24:34 alludes to an individual appearance to Simon Peter in passing. Yet none of the Gospels provides a narrative or transcript of these private appearances. If the Gospels were fabricated, authors would feel free to invent such narratives. The best explanation: Peter and James did not make their private encounter with Jesus available for public dissemination because it was a private meeting. The fact that Luke is aware of the individual appearance to Peter (Luke 24:34) but doesn't narrate it is especially striking. This pattern suggests the Gospel authors were reporting faithfully within the limits of their knowledge rather than freely inventing.
