Richard Carrier's claim that all extra-biblical sources simply copy Gospel accounts is refuted by Tacitus's late date and hostile stance
Refuting Carrier's hypothesis that non-Christian sources merely echo the Gospels
Richard Carrier claims all subsequent historical claims about Jesus are based on the Gospels. Licona counters: (1) Tacitus, writing around AD 115, would require early Gospel dating if he read them; (2) Tacitus viewed Christianity as an evil superstition — why would he borrow from Gospels?; (3) the misspelling of Christians as "Chrestians" doesn't make sense if copying the Gospels. These are ad hoc explanations with no supporting evidence.
