Q&A: Does Matthew 11:21-22 (Tyre and Sidon) challenge Calvinism?

Stop Saying All Roads Lead to God! 01:09:09 – 01:11:42

Viewer question from James Giorgio

Matthew 11:21-22: "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you." Winger acknowledges this may be a genuine challenge to Calvinist soteriology: if the people of Tyre and Sidon would have repented with sufficient evidence, this suggests repentance is a live possibility given the right circumstances, not a matter of unconditional divine election alone. A Calvinist might respond: "they would have repented" means they would have changed their society but not been eternally saved, or that Jesus is speaking metaphorically. Winger finds the first Calvinist escape hatch weak and invites Calvinist viewers to respond.
