Old Testament narrative case study illustrating the knowing/showing distinction
In 1 Kings 18, Elijah knows Yahweh is God through personal prophetic experience. But to show the doubting Israelites he proposes an evidential wager: let the God who answers by fire be declared God. When God answers, the people fall on their faces and confess Yahweh. Elijah did not need the fire for his own knowledge; it served as evidence for others. Elijah's prayer (1 Kings 18:36-37): 'let it be known today that you are God in Israel.' The miracle then spread as eyewitness testimony throughout Israel.
