A church with a single pastor and no elders should seek plurality of leadership; address the concern privately and graciously with the pastor
Question from Michael Francisco about a church with one pastor who teaches everything and no elders — how to raise the concern.
Mike affirms that plurality of leadership is biblical and that a single-leader model is vulnerable to that leader's flaws permeating the whole ministry. Multiple leaders provide accountability and balance. Advice for approaching the pastor: (1) Prepare a brief, focused case for plurality — just 2-3 key points; (2) Go to the pastor directly, not through the congregation grapevine; (3) Begin by affirming and endorsing the pastor's leadership; (4) Frame it as identifying something missing, not attacking what exists. If change proves impossible, do not take it to others rebelliously — work within the structure, submit joyfully, and trust God with what you cannot change.
