What does the Bible teach on masturbation? — No direct address; biblical principles of lust, self-gratification, and marital fidelity apply

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 4) 00:23:00 – 00:29:05

Question from Arvin Marlow.

The Bible does not directly address masturbation. Rather than a simple sin/not-sin verdict, three related biblical principles apply: (1) Lust — if lust is involved, it is sinful regardless of the accompanying behavior; many who think they struggle with masturbation are actually struggling with uncontrolled lust that begins far earlier. (2) Self-gratification / gluttony — excessive pleasure-seeking that enslaves the heart is sinful (analogous to gluttony); whether masturbation crosses that line varies. (3) Marital fidelity — in marriage, sexual desire belongs to the spouse; masturbation can undermine that covenant commitment. For single people Mike sees more ambiguity. He holds the issue open and invites thoughtful discussion.
