The witness of the Spirit (Romans 8:16) — an internal truth-awareness of being God's child, not an emotion

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 4) 00:40:44 – 00:43:49

Question from John Butterfield about what the witness of the Spirit is and how to obtain it.

Romans 8:16: "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." Bearing witness is an act of imparting truth, not primarily producing emotion. The witness is an awareness — a deep inner knowing that one is a child of God, enabling the cry "Abba, Father" (Rom 8:15). Mike contrasts this with Pentecostal/emotional interpretations ("strangely warmed heart") and Mormon "burning in the bosom." While the Spirit can warm emotions, the witness is a truth-statement known in one's spirit. It does not require constant felt 24/7 awareness; modern Christians are overly feelings-focused.
