Annihilationism fails because (1) immortality does not mean eternal existence, and (2) Jesus uses the same word "everlasting" for both heaven and hell

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 6) 00:51:29 – 00:53:04

Question from Selenora about why annihilationism is unbiblical

Annihilationism teaches that the unsaved are destroyed rather than enduring eternal conscious torment. Mike gives two quick objections: (1) Annihilationists argue man is only conditionally immortal and therefore doesn't necessarily exist forever. Mike says "immortal" doesn't mean "existing forever" — it means fullness of life. Eternal life (immortality) is what Jesus grants believers; being in hell is not immortality. (2) Jesus uses parallel language for the duration of heaven and hell — both are described as aionios (everlasting/eternal) in the same sentence. The annihilationist response that "the results of punishment are everlasting but not the person" is an insufficient dodge around what Jesus actually says.
