Divine hardening in John's Gospel as a challenge to Calvinist Total Depravity

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 8) Fixed and Reuploaded 00:06:06 – 00:07:10

Mike argues divine hardening is inconsistent with Total Depravity.

Mike points out that in John's Gospel God hardens people's hearts in relation to the gospel. He argues this does not make sense if people are already totally depraved (totally unable to respond). If they will always reject the gospel anyway, there is no added effect to hardening their hearts. He says he has asked Calvinists to explain divine hardening in relation to the gospel and has never received a satisfying answer. He references his own video on divine hardening that covers Pharaoh's hardened heart and critiques Calvinism as a side note.
