Acts 16:31 does not teach household salvation -- the household's rejoicing proves they individually believed

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 11) 00:40:24 – 00:43:27

Responding to Sarah P's report that her Bible teacher taught household salvation from Acts 16:31

Mike reads Acts 16:31-34. The teacher's error: taking 'believe and you will be saved, you and your household' to mean the jailer's faith saves his family. Mike's corrected reading: the promise applies equally to each household member -- if they believe, they will be saved. The clincher is verse 34: the entire household 'rejoiced that he had believed in God.' Non-believing family members would not celebrate a father's conversion; their joy evidences their own faith.
