Unleavened bread at communion is symbolically important (sinlessness of Christ); alcoholic vs non-alcoholic wine is incidental

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 11) 00:59:13 – 01:00:44

Responding to Kumbo Munsaka's question about whether alcoholic wine and unleavened bread are required at the Lord's Supper

Mike argues that whether grape juice is fermented is not the theologically significant factor -- the wine is symbolic as grape juice (blood), not because of its alcohol content. By contrast, the absence of leaven is specifically symbolic of Christ's sinlessness, making unleavened bread theologically meaningful. Romans 14 (those who abstain from alcohol still take communion) proves alcoholic wine cannot be required.
