1 Corinthians 10:16-22

1 Corinthians 10:16-22 — Communion as Participation in Christ's Body

"Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing (koinonia) in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing (koinonia) in the body of Christ? Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread." (vv.16-17, NASB)

The Corporate Meaning of Communion

Paul's theology of communion is fundamentally corporate, not individualistic. The "sharing" (koinonia) in Christ's blood and body is not merely a private devotional act but an affirmation of communal identity. The one bread symbolizes the unity of believers as one body (v.17). To partake is to declare: we belong to each other because we belong to Christ.

The Table of the Lord vs. the Table of Demons (vv.19-22)

Paul draws a sharp antithesis: you cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons (v.21). Some Corinthians were attending meals in pagan temples — eating sacrifices offered to idols while also participating in the Lord's Supper. CS notes from Psalm 106:28 that Israel "joined themselves to Baal-Peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead" — the same dynamic Paul addresses. Participating in idol feasts makes one a "partner" (koinonos) with demons, just as participating in communion makes one a partner with Christ.

The "table" language has OT roots. In Malachi 1:6-7, the altar and the table of the Lord are treated as equivalent. In Ezekiel, the table is a place of slaughtering sacrifice. Paul draws on this sacrificial framework: communion is not merely a memorial meal but genuine participation in the sacrificial reality of Christ's death.

Implications

The communion theology of 1 Cor 10 establishes that how believers eat together reflects their spiritual allegiances. This prepares for Paul's rebuke in 1 Cor 11:17-34, where the Corinthians' selfish eating patterns at the Lord's Supper betray a failure to recognize the corporate body of Christ in their midst.
