Pluck out your eye (Matthew 5:29) vs. having an advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1)

Subscriber Hangout and Q&A - LIVE! 00:08:50 – 00:11:23

A viewer asks how to reconcile the command to pluck out your eye with the promise of an advocate with the Father.

Mike identifies the 'pluck out your eye' language as obvious hyperbole — Jesus is urging extreme measures in battling sin, not literal self-mutilation. The eyes are not the cause of sin. The advocate passage (1 John 2:1) refers to Christ interceding for believers who sin. The tension is between: (1) a believer struggling with sin who needs encouragement and grace, and (2) a non-believer using God's forgiveness as license to remain in sin. Mike deliberately refuses to fully resolve the tension so as not to give cover to those using grace as an excuse to avoid repentance.
