Early church creeds: authoritative insofar as they reflect Scripture, not equal to Scripture; beware anachronism

Mike cannot fully engage the Athanasian Creed off the cuff but offers two principles about creeds generally: (1) They are not inerrant and do not possess Scripture's authority — some theologians treat them as such, which Mike finds wrong. (2) Their language is archaic and must be interpreted in historical context — e.g., 'catholic church' in a creed means 'universal church,' not Roman Catholicism. Anachronism is a real danger when reading modern meanings into ancient creed language.
