Temptation originates primarily from one's own sinful desires, not Satan — James 1:13-15

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 12) 00:46:13 – 00:50:20

Question about whether all temptation comes from Satan/demons or from one's sinful self.

Mike goes directly to James 1:13-15. God does not tempt anyone (v.13). Each person is tempted by their own desires (v.14). Satan's role is secondary: he identifies and exploits existing sinful desires but cannot tempt where no desire exists. Mike uses an analogy of a rooster and egg: the desire is the egg, and lust 'conceiving' (James 1:15) happens when the willpower (rooster) unites with the desire — that is the moment of sin, before the external action. He emphasizes that every temptation faced is only tempting because of existing wicked desires, making personal responsibility unavoidable. Through Christ one can say no to self and therefore to the enemy.
