Viewer Silas Bourner asks whether the authority Jesus granted the Twelve and Seventy to heal and cast out demons is different from spiritual gifts.

Mike notes casting out demons does not appear in any NT gift list (only 'discerning of spirits' is close). Gifts of healings do appear. He argues the apostles were not the model for every Christian's gifting. Most importantly, he suggests the pre-Pentecost missions are better characterized as delegated authority (Jesus himself granting command-authority) whereas post-Pentecost spiritual gifts are Spirit-enablement (the Spirit works through you as he wills — you cannot simply command it). This distinction may explain why figures like Kenneth Copeland who claim ongoing divine authority are problematic.
