1 Samuel 16:14 describes how the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul (who had it as anointing to be king) and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. The Spirit was on Saul because Israel's king needed the anointing to rule in the nation where God was sovereign. When Saul's behavior disqualified him, the Spirit departed and the harmful spirit arrived.
