God's timelessness and sequential thought — divine omniscience outside time

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 24) 00:22:14 – 00:25:16

Jason and Alana ask how a timeless God could have sequential thoughts, especially the decision to create time.

Mike's answer: if God is truly timeless he does not have sequential thoughts — all knowledge is simultaneously present in him. God is outside time and simply knows everything at once without going through a sequence of reasoning. Mike references William Lane Craig's book 'God in Time' which defends an alternative view: God is timeless sans the universe, but when he creates the universe, the first moment of creation may be when God enters time to interact with it. Mike finds this interesting but uncertain. Jesus in his earthly ministry did have sequential thoughts — demonstrating that at least in the incarnation, God in flesh acts within time. Mike connects this to Jesus limiting his own knowledge and power during the incarnation.
