Non-negotiable Christian doctrines — essentials vs. secondary issues

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 24) 00:25:46 – 00:31:20

DJ Diner asks what doctrines Christians should plant their flag on and never back down from.

Essentials (hills to die on): (1) Deity of Christ — Jesus is God. (2) Humanity of Christ — Jesus is truly human. Dropping either means it is not Christianity. (3) Death and resurrection of Christ — he truly died for sin and physically rose on the third day. (4) Monotheism — one God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Polytheism such as Mormonism's view that God is one of many gods is antithetical to Christianity. Secondary but important: Inerrancy of Scripture — Mike believes it but would not say someone is unsaved for rejecting it; however, doubting Scripture's reliability causes massive harm in people's lives. Mike would not allow an errantist to teach in a church under his authority. Sexuality/homosexuality is secondary in the sense of not determining salvation, but ongoing unrepentant sin of any kind raises questions about whether genuine faith and repentance are present, pushing the secondary issue toward primary concern.

Is Free Will “Another” Gospel?

What is the problem? It is common for Calvinists to argue that humanity can’t have free will because free will would necessitate a salvation based on works. Although the Bible does not make this claim, people have been subject to unfair accusations of heresy by overly zealous Calvinists.

κεφαλή (kephale) — Logos Clippings (Cheryl Schatz)

A curated collection of Logos Bible Software clippings compiled by Cheryl Schatz examining the Greek word κεφαλή (kephale) and Hebrew רֹאשׁ (rosh). The clippings draw from lexicons, encyclopedias, commentaries, and academic journals to argue that "source/origin" is the primary metaphorical meaning of kephale rather than "authority/leader," with implications for interpreting 1 Corinthians 11, Ephesians 5, and Colossians 1.
