Saints rising from tombs after the crucifixion (Matthew 27) — who were they?
James and Lindsey ask about the people coming out of tombs after Jesus's resurrection in Matthew 27 — did they continue living or ascend?
Matthew 27: at Jesus's death, a great earthquake opened tombs near Jerusalem. After his resurrection, saints came out and appeared to many. Mike reads the grammar as: tombs opened at crucifixion, saints emerged after resurrection. They are called saints (hagioi) — almost certainly saved individuals who had died. We never read of them again after this. Mike speculates they could have been recently deceased or from generations past. He raises the possibility that Simeon (the elderly man at Jesus's circumcision who said he could die in peace) might have been among them. Like Lazarus, they likely did not have glorified bodies and may have died again, but Scripture does not tell us. Whether they ascended or simply disappeared from the narrative is unknown.
