Covert narcissism and Proverbs 16:5 — misunderstanding grace; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 24) 01:06:04 – 01:12:11

Giant Mushroom Tree is being diagnosed with covert narcissistic personality disorder and fears Proverbs 16:5 means they are unsavable.

Proverbs 16:5: everyone arrogant in heart is an abomination to the LORD. Mike identifies the hidden false assumption: am I good enough to be saved? This misunderstands grace — no one is good enough; that is why it is called grace. The biggest narcissist or worst sinner can come to Christ and be made a new creation. A secondary false belief: this is just who I am and it is unchangeable. Mike cites 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: the list of the unrighteous who will not inherit the kingdom (sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers, swindlers) is followed by verse 11: and such were some of you — past tense. People in the Corinthian church had been all of these things and were changed by Christ. The power to change is Christ's, not ours.
