Matthew 10:23 — 'before the Son of Man comes' refers to Christ's first-coming arrival, not the Second Coming

Kelly Book asks about Matthew 10:23 and why Mark's parallel account does not include the phrase 'before the Son of Man comes.'

Matthew 10:23: you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. Mike argues the phrase refers to Jesus's own first-coming itinerant ministry tour, not the Second Coming. Evidence: (1) In Matthew 28 after crucifixion Jesus commissions worldwide evangelism — at that point the scope expands to all nations. (2) In Acts, the disciples are told to wait and then preach the gospel globally. (3) The context of Matthew 10 is the limited sending of the Twelve during Jesus's ministry, two by two, to towns of Israel. Jesus is telling them: I'm sending you ahead of me; if persecuted, move on because I'll catch up with you before you can cover all the towns. The coming of the Son of Man here is Jesus traveling to meet them on his itinerant route, not the eschatological parousia. Not a problem passage.
