Forgiveness: will and emotions are separate; you can choose to forgive before your heart feels it

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 25) 00:43:51 – 00:46:22

Responding to whether one can say words of forgiveness when the heart has not yet caught up

Mike argues that will and emotions are distinct. You can choose to forgive (act of will) while still processing emotional hurt. This is not lying — lying would be when the will itself is not engaged at all. Forgiveness is not always a single line in the sand; sometimes there is a recovery period for the heart. The signs of genuine forgiveness: no desire for the other person to suffer, no bitterness, no holding a grudge, wanting them to repent. Leading emotions rather than being led by them is walking by faith.
